The greatest dancers have been those who have gone beyond technique, whose virtuosity or dramatic power has concealed and minimized the physical difficulties of their dancing and transformed it into art.
Yet it is also a work of sweat and tears. As it was danced Wednesday night at the City Center by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for the first time, the work's uncommon beauty emerged directly from the unusual degree of visible physical effort involved in the choreography for its seven men dancers.
